This is how ant mound is often constructed

This is how most ants make their mound. Basically it's under the ground. Also, the mound you see outside is from the soil they are digging below.. They all take it outside. Understandably enough, they put the queen in the deepest part of the mound so she can be a lot safer than the other ones in the colony.
