Grape stomping is a traditional winemaking method in which harvested grapes are crushed by stomping on them with feet in an era when crushers were not available. Historically, this was considered to be the most commonly used method. In the past, when wine was a drink with stronger religious significance than it is today, making wine from grapes stomped by "pure virgins" may have been a way of symbolizing the purity of the wine.
